United Airlines says a flight from Newark to St. Louis was diverted to Akron, Ohio Thursday after a dog was mistakenly loaded onto the plane.

United Airlines said in a statement that “the pet has been safely delivered to its owner. We provided compensation to all customers on board for the diversion."

It was the third pet-related incident the airline had in a week.

On Tuesday, a 10-year-old German shepherd was accidentally flown to Japan. The dog, Irgo, was supposed to go to Kansas City. When his owner went to pick him up, she was met with a Great Dane who should have been in Japan. Irgo and his owner have since been reunited.

On Monday, a dog died when a flight attendant placed it in an overhead bin. The French bulldog was flying from Houston to New York. Animal cruelty officials from Texas are investigating the incident.

In response to the death of the French bulldog, United Airlines said it is launching a new policy involving brightly-colored tags that will be placed on all animal carriers.
