Union County students rebel against cigarettes
? Union County high school students gathered Saturday at the Garden State Bowling Alley to knock down pins and knock out cigarette smoke.
About 100 students participated in the event sponsored by Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies (REBEL). REBEL is a non-profit group funded by cigarette taxes. Member Philip Taback?s wife, who worked at the bowling alley, died in 1999 after being exposed to second-hand smoke there for 40 years. Taback says REBEL?s work is important because it reaches young people before they become smokers.
Saturday?s event was the first day the bowling alley was smoke free since it opened. New Jersey?s indoor smoking ban takes effect April 15.
