“No one is more disappointed than we are to see a delay in a season with such great promise for Rutgers, but it was the only decision to make in the face of the global pandemic,” says University President Jonathan Holloway.
University Athletic Director Pat Hobbs also released a letter, saying in part, “Dear Rutgers Nation, today the Big Ten Conference announced the postponement of the 2020 fall sports season. This decision impacts our football, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer and volleyball programs. This decision was made in the interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes and the broader community. The pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for our society and this outcome was always a possibility. Unfortunately, it has become a reality.”
"While I know our decision today will be disappointing in many ways for our thousands of student-athletes and their families, I am heartened and inspired by their resilience, their insightful and discerning thoughts, and their participation through our conversations to this point,” says Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren.
One of the options suggested is to play a season in the spring, although there is no outline on exactly how that could work when it comes to football, considering they'd be coming right back again next fall.
