The Transportation Security Administration is reminding air travelers to always check security checkpoint bins for belongings before hurrying away to their airport gates.

TSA officials say that travelers left behind $960,105 in unclaimed money at checkpoints in 2018. Travelers at Newark Liberty International Airport left behind $41,026 in 2018 – the fifth most in the nation.

Travelers at John F. Kennedy Int'l Airport in New York left behind $72,392 in 2018 – the most in the country.

“TSA makes every effort to reunite passengers with items left at the checkpoint, however there are instances where loose change or other items are left behind and unclaimed,” the agency said in a media news release.

Officials say that the money left behind is documented and turned in to the TSA financial office.

The unclaimed money is often used to pay for checkpoint maintenance and other system enhancements. Congress gave the TSA the authority to use the unclaimed money in 2005.
