TSA: 4 tons of prohibited items confiscated each year at Newark Liberty International Airport
The Transportation Security Administration confiscates about four tons of prohibited items from security checkpoints at Newark Liberty International Airport each year.
TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein took to Twitter Wednesday to post pictures of dozens of items confiscated at check points this holiday travel season. She says that the most commonly confiscated item is a knife, which are not allowed in carry-on bags.
Farbstein says that many travelers forget that they have pocketknives attached to their key chains. Other travelers have tried to bring items like scissors, butter knives or straight razors. All of these items need to be placed in checked bags if a traveler wishes to bring them onboard a plane.
"The only thing that the TSA officers are interested in is to make sure that you get to your destination safely," Farbstein says.
Other items confiscated at the airport this season include a loaded handgun, blow torch, gardening tools and a stun gun.
Travelers who are unsure if they are allowed to bring an item through security are able to send pictures to the TSA via the @AskTSA Twitter account or through the TSA Facebook account.
Prohibited carry-on items confiscated at airports are later sold at auctions.
