A tractor-trailer carrying 40,000 pounds of cola syrup jackknifed on Route 32 near the New Jersey Turnpike in South Brunswick.
South Brunswick police say the heavy load shifted while the truck tried to make a turn from Cranbury-South River Road onto Route 32 West around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The weight of the load caused the truck to jackknife, and the trailer split in two.
Crews on the scene tell News 12 New Jersey that the load was cola syrup, used to make fountain sodas.
Officials say the truck's fuel tank also ruptured, spilling some fuel onto the roadway.
The Monmouth Junction Fire Department, Middlesex County Hazmat, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation all responded to the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured.
A portion of Route 32 West was closed for a time leading to traffic delays. A second tractor-trailer accident on the New Jersey Turnpike close to the jackknife scene also led to some heavy delays.
