Trial begins for handyman accused of child sex abuse
Opening arguments were heard Tuesday in the case of an Ocean Township handyman who is charged with 429 counts of sex crimes on children.
At issue in the trial against Clement Bilski are 151 of those counts, which allegedly involved just one little girl. Prosecutors believe they have an overwhelming amount of evidence in the one case, and that there is no need to drag other families into court.
During the opening statements, Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Clark told the jury that Bilski repeatedly raped a little girl from the time she was in preschool through first grade. The girl?s father took the stand and said Bilski was able to gain access to his daughter because he was hired to do renovation projects on their home.
Videos, along with a computer and video equipment seized from Bilski?s home in 2006, were presented as evidence.
?Every act ? every indignity ? every offense done to the person of that little girl has been recorded in video taken by the defendant?? Clark said. ?It is that video that supports 149 of the 151 counts of the indictment.?
Bilski?s attorney, John Goins, admitted that his client is the man seen in the video repeatedly sexually assaulting the girl. Goins then asked the jury to determine if his client was sick at the time of his crimes. He asked the jury to consider Bilski?s mental health.
