Trenton announces 70 layoffs to cut budget deficit
Seventy employees of the city of Trenton will find themselves out of work immediately following the holidays.
Trenton is facing a $27 million budget deficit, and Mayor Doug Palmer says the layoffs will save about $7 million. The layoffs come from every city department, except for police, fire and administrative jobs.
The city has not had to deal with layoffs in 30 years, and this is the first time Palmer has had to cut jobs in nearly two decades in office.
"This was very sad for me personally," says the mayor.
Some of the cut workers have been employed by the city for decades.
"There's a lot of hurt and a lot of anger," says Mike Collins, who got his pink slip Tuesday after 24 years of service with the city's department of inspections.
Employees still have time to appeal the cuts. Some long-time employees can reapply for jobs with demotions and pay cuts.
