Train service resumes at Hoboken Terminal station after crash
Rail service at Hoboken Terminal resumed for the Monday morning commute more than a week after a train crashed into the station.
Northern branch New Jersey Transit train lines are coming back in but the Jersey Coast Line and Raritan Valley Line are still being stopped in Newark. Passengers are asked to use PATH trains to get to Hoboken.
Tracks 1 to 9 will remain out of service until further notice as repair work continues on the section of the station that was badly damaged in the crash.
New Jersey Transit Pascack Valley Line train 1614 slammed through a bumper at the end of the track and dislodged an overhead canopy, showering debris onto the train, on Sept. 29. Federal investigators say the train sped up and was going twice the 10 mph speed limit just before the crash.
The crash killed a 34-year-old mother who was standing on the platform. Over 100 other people were injured.
Passengers who were on the train can reclaim their belongings at the customer service center located by Track 14.
New Jersey Transit says that most of the items from the train have been recovered, but some can still not be accessed.
"It runs the gamut. Everything from umbrellas to passports to jackets to laptops, purses, you name it," says NJ Transit's Jen Nelson. "Even pens that could be personal to people. Those kind of items were picked up and brought in here."
Customers who were on the train will need to bring identification to pick up items left behind after the crash.
Some of the convenience shops inside the station also reopened Monday. Others are expected to reopen Tuesday.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
