Medgar Evers College hosted a town hall meeting Wednesday night to explain what changes in a Homeland Security plan could mean for residents.

The Department of Homeland Security revoked the temporary protected status, or TPS, for more than 2,500 Nicaraguans living in the U.S. and gave them until January of 2019 to either leave the country or change their immigration status.

The status allows people from certain countries to live in the United States without facing forced removal.

DHS has also made determinations for those from Honduras, Sudan and South Sudan. Those affected by the recent TPS updates are now scrambling to figure out what their options are.

Many people from throughout the country and in Brooklyn were given temporary protected status because of violent conflicts in their home countries or devastating environmental disasters.

Wednesday's meeting also helped those enrolled in the DACA program, which protects undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children. Residents were given legal advice, provided with support services and had questioned answered.
