Thousands remain without power following Monday’s strong winds
Thousands of New Jersey’s residents remained without power Tuesday evening following Monday’s strong winds.
The winds around the Garden State reached over 50 mph for a sustained length of time Monday and uprooted trees and knocked down powerlines.
The Byron family in Brick Township says that the last two days without power have been particularly difficult for them. Brittany Brian just gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday.
“She is in desperate need to get home,” says father James Byron.
The Byrons say that it is 47 degrees inside the home due to the lack of power and cold temperatures outside, so no one is staying there.
“My newborn daughter, my 4-year-old son and my wife are now currently in a friend’s house, a 10 x 10 room living out of a suitcase,” says James.
The outage was caused by a downed tree that was covering part of the dead-end street where the Byrons live. Neighbors had been calling utility JCP&L ever since. Francz Hyppolite said that if the power wasn’t back on by Tuesday evening, he would have to take his family elsewhere.
“The thing is we have kids. We cannot let them sleep in a cold situation like that. It's inhuman,” he says.
JCP&L crews did show up on the Byrons’ street by 4 p.m. after they learned about the circumstances surrounding the new baby.
“Our challenge yesterday was that we couldn't send bucket trucks out before 4 p.m. The power will be restored tonight,” JPC&L spokesperson Jennifer Young said in a statement.
James Byron says that while he waits he has been making trips back and forth for supplies.
"We need bottles so I'll come back and get a bottle for her. We'll need formula, I come back and get formula because everything is here,” he says.
The power is expected to be fully restored sometime Wednesday.
