Authorities say that a high school student was talking on her cellphone when she struck and killed her school district's superintendent while he was jogging.

Mercer County prosecutors charged the driver with death by auto and leaving the scene of the accident that killed Schools Superintendent Steven Mayer on April 19. Prosecutors did not release the teen's name because she was 17 when the incident happened.

The girl was also charged with reckless driving and improper use of a cellphone while driving.

Investigators say that the teen was late for a class trip when she struck Mayer and his dog around 6:15 a.m. The dog was also killed.

The driver will be required to appear in Mercer County Family Court. A hearing date has not yet been set.

Mayer was a married father of three sons. His wife taught at an elementary school in the Robbsinville district.
