Lawmakers in Suffolk County lawmakers are pushing to stop vape shops from targeting underage customers through the sale of fruit-flavored liquid for e-cigarettes.
If the measure is passed, vape and other shops would only be allowed to sell tobacco-, mint- or menthol-flavored e-liquid.
News 12 spoke with some vape shop owners who say the move would essentially put them out of business, as fruit flavors are their top sellers.
Legislator William Spencer, who introduced the bill, says he is sensitive to the owners' disposition, but he must ultimately consider the health of Suffolk residents.
"We have to take action now," Spencer says. "We have to protect these kids."
Chad Breyer, who opened the Cloud Vapor Lounge in Miller Place in 2015, says kids who want to smoke will finds ways of doing so. But he says that won't happen at his store. He says his customers want fruit-flavored products.
The Legislature's health committee tabled the measure Thursday. It will be considered at the next regularly scheduled health committee meeting.
