(03/06/06) HAMILTON ? The operation of GPS systems may soon join handheld cell phones on the list of driving restrictions in the state of New Jersey.

A recent study conducted by a British insurance company shows 19 percent of 2000 drivers lost their concentration while operating an in-car GPS system. In addition, one in 10 motorists didn?t even program a route until they were on the road. Representatives for AAA say any type of distraction while driving, including GPS operation, is dangerous.

The study has fueled speculation of possible state legislation banning the use of GPS systems while motorists are driving. Many residents agree with the safe use of the systems, which means pulling over to map out a course. Possible safeguards in the future could include GPS systems that won?t operate until a vehicle has come to a stop.
