A Wall Township High School student who had his Donald Trump shirt censored from the high school yearbook is calling for an independent investigation into the incident.
Students Wyatt Dobrovich and Grant Berardo were wearing shirts supporting President Trump when they had their yearbook photos taken. Those photos were doctored in the final product. Dobrovich’s sister Montana had her Donald Trump yearbook quote omitted as well.
School officials say that the school’s yearbook advisor was to blame, and suspended her indefinitely. The district addressed the censorship during Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
"I want it to be definitely investigated independently, with no one else involved in this situation. I think that's very important,” Dobrovich said in the meeting.
The school says that they are investigating the situation, but Dobrovich tells News 12 New Jersey that he is skeptical of Superintendent Cheryl Dyer’s involvement.
"I expressed concern over her posting anti-Trump opinionated articles on to the school website, and how she should not be able to lead this investigation when she's blatantly shown her political point of view,” he says.
Some other community members agree with Dobrovich. Gary Precorian says that he believes there's more to the story than just one teacher's politically charged actions.
“I’m going to ask you [Superintendent Dyer] the same question. Did you have anything to do with this, evening winking, nodding, [saying] ‘Go ahead,’ because no one believes this woman acted alone,” Precorian said at the meeting.
The Trump administration has voiced support for Dobrovich and his sister. A letter addressed to the siblings was posted on Trump’s personal Facebook page and they were sent some Trump campaign items.
The yearbooks will be replaced with the original photos and quotes. The superintendent says that several private donors will cover the cost.
Some who attended the meeting tell News 12 that they believe that those responsible for the censorship should pay for the new books.
