Struggling Newark families get needed help
Four hundred needy Newark families received some help Sunday from Feed the Children and a special guest.
Newark mom Annette Davis says she struggles to provide for her five children. Having gone back to school to receive a GED, she says things are still difficult.
"It?s hard at the beginning of the month and the end of the month," she says.
The struggling families received boxes full of free food and personal care items.
"At this time ? we're in such a severe crisis, especially in the low-income communities,? says Genia Philip of Newark Emergency Services.
Miami Dolphins tight end Anthony Fasano came along with Feed the Children to help hand out boxes. The Glen Ridge native calls the experience eye-opening.
"You always think about it but until you get down here and see it firsthand, you take my lifestyle and a lot of people's lifestyles for granted,? he says.
Nearly 80 volunteers, from local students to members of the community, turned out to help. They distributed boxes and carried them to people's cars.
