Local veterans say they are disappointed that the flags that hung over the Woodbridge Avenue overpass had to be removed.

The veterans had been caring for the flags for almost 20 years. They say it was an act of patriotism, since right after Sept. 11, 2001.

Mark Tolley, one of the veterans who has been caring for the flags, says the group got word that Department of Transportation Crews were planning to take the flags down, saying they were a distraction.

The group received complaints about a pro-law enforcement flag, but they had removed that one and replaced it a few weeks ago.

Tolley says he decided to take down all the flags last week before authorities did, to preserve them, saying they are part of local history.

A Facebook group dedicated to the flags has over 600 members.

Kristi Hanson, a Woodbridge resident for almost 20 years, is a member. She says she was devastated to learn the flags were coming down.

"I am very patriotic person and I'm very passionate about my country and those who serve it. Having family members who served in the military and lost their lives it means a lot to me, it's iconic and it's something that means a lot to the residents in the town," Hanson says.

The group of veterans say they hope to work with local authorities to get the flags back up and waving along the overpass and others as soon as possible.
