Dozens of residents came out to the Fair Lawn Post Office to defend the United States Postal Service (USPS) against what they call attacks ahead of the general election.
The Save Our Mail, Save Our Votes Rally was hosted by Indivisible Northern New Jersey and Women for Progress.
Organizers say that President Donald Trump's attacks and defunding of the postal system are a direct threat to the right to vote and the integrity of the election.
In 2018, President Trump issued an executive order to create a postal task force. They recommended the agency sell off portions of the service to private industry.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has been accused of helping President Trump's reelection campaign this year by reducing overtime, restricting deliveries and providing conflicting information on the timeline for mail-in ballots.
More than a dozen rallies took place across the Garden State Friday to support the USPS, and more were held today in what is being dubbed "Save the Post Office Saturday."
"My mom worked for the United States Post Office for over 20 something years," says Anna Wong, a member of Women for Progress. "She came here as an immigrant from China with literally nothing. No money, no education and what this country gave her in terms of opportunities to me came directly from the United States Post Office. It's so much bigger than just this election. It's part of the fabric of this country, it's part of a functioning democracy."
On Friday, DeJoy said he would classify all election mail as first-class mail and committed to delivering 95% of that within one to three days.
In a rare Saturday vote, the House approved legislation that would reverse recent changes in U.S. Postal Service operations and send $25 billion to shore up the agency ahead of the November election.
