A Hudson County bakery is not letting the effects of COVID-19 cripple the business.
“Our cakes, they actually look as good as they taste,” says Hudson Cakery owner Jennifer Bunce. “We do a lot of upscale wedding cakes, birthday cakes, baby showers. Literally anything you can think of, we can do it for any event.”
But Bunce says that the initial impact of the pandemic raised concern for her Weehawken-based business.
“A lot of our special events stopped, so we literally panicked because we only work for special events. About 90% of our business was done overnight,” she says.
Bunce says that she now has more orders to fulfill, but less to make.
“Everything was just physically smaller…because you couldn’t have more than five, 10 people at one point in a gathering,” she says.
The business is also taking care to stay safe during the pandemic.
“We have to wear masks and gloves full time, all day long,” says Bunce. “We’ll bring everything out to you curbside, that way no one is in the shop.”
All orders need to be placed at least two or three weeks in advance.
