Hoboken officials say that 51% of Hoboken residents who answered a survey are in favor of implementing a $250 fine for those who refuse to wear face coverings.

The city is considering an ordinance to potentially fine people in Hoboken who are not wearing masks outdoors when social distancing is not possible.

Officials sent out a survey to get the opinion of Hoboken residents.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla says that he supports the plan, but some members of the City Council do not. Those opposed to the plan say that there are better ways to protect the public, including handing out masks, rather than fining those who do not use them.

The Hoboken City Council will vote on the ordinance at Wednesday night's virtual meeting. The public will also have a chance to voice their opinion about the issue.
