Gov. Murphy responds to reports he was seen eating inside a restaurant over the weekend
Gov. Phil Murphy is setting the record straight about reports that he was seen eating inside of a restaurant over the weekend, despite executive orders banning the act during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A picture circulated on social media over the weekend that appeared to show the governor inside of Martell’s Waters Edge in Bayville.
Republican state Sen. Declan O’Scanlon retweeted one of the posts with the caption, “Wow. The hypocrisy is astounding!” About an hour later, the senator said that he spoke with the governor’s office about the photo.
“So, I heard from the Governor’s office. Told that he - and those other patrons - were dining outside and only took shelter inside during a downpour. If that’s true then fair enough. Maybe some other patrons can shed light,” O’Scanlon tweeted.
Murphy, on Monday, confirmed this, saying, “Not only did I eat outside with my wife, daughter and her friend on Saturday – we sat in the driving rain. And I ruined everything in my pockets.
Martell’s manager Rich Sorge told New Jersey 101.5 that the restaurant has a very large outdoor tiki deck for outdoor dining and that this was where the governor was spotted.
Murphy took issue with O’Scanlon’s tweet and the fact that people were posting photos on social media without all the facts.
“I just want to talk about the irresponsibility…of folks sending a post around like that, and then elected leaders actually tagging on to that and then talking about hypocrisy,” Murphy said.
Indoor dining was supposed to resume on July 2, but the governor announced that it would be delayed, because of a lack of compliance over the use of face masks and social distancing.
“The carelessness of one establishment can completely undo the good work of many others. We will not tolerate outlier bars and restaurants – and, frankly, patrons – who think the rules don’t apply to them. They are the ones who ruin it for everyone else,” Murphy said.
The governor said that the decisions he has made have all been made to protect vulnerable New Jersey residents from the virus.
“If one person gets infected as a result of [not following the rules], or if one person goes to the hospital, as a result of that, if God forbid…someone’s life is lost as a result of that…that’s blood on their hands, man. I don’t know how you can live with yourself,” Murphy said.
A new date for allowing indoor dining has not been set, but the governor said that it could be “weeks.”
