Many in Middlesex County are calling to change the name of Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.

 

In the last few weeks, many have called for change when it comes to buildings named after former New Jersey governor, and U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson.

A protest Tuesday night in New Brunswick called for the name of Woodrow Wilson Elementary school to be changed too. Organizers say it's time to acknowledge Wilson's views on race, and implement a lasting change.

“What tarnishes his legacy is the segregation, and the white supremacist aspects of it,” says Tormel Pitman, of South Brunswick. “So, if his name was to be on a World War monument, that's perfectly fine, but I don't think it's accurate for his name to be on an elementary school."

Monmouth University's Board of Trustees last week voted unanimously to remove Wilson's name from its marquee building and renaming it "The Great Hall at Shadow Lawn."

In Camden, a committee is being formed to find a new name for Woodrow Wilson High School. A petition is making the rounds in Clifton to change the name of both of the districts’ middle schools. One of the schools is named after Wilson -- the other after Christopher Columbus, another figuring sparking controversy and change.
