Two Rutgers University football players have tested positive for COVID-19. The announcement comes just a week after the school allowed players back on campus for summer workouts.
Head Coach Greg Schiano says that the program has done three rounds of coronavirus testing on players. The first time was before they returned to campus, followed by two more since the voluntary workouts began on June 15.
“You cannot reduce the risk to zero. That we all understand,” Schiano says.
One player tested positive during the first round of testing and never made it on to campus. The second player tested negative the first time, but then came up positive during the second round of testing last week. Schiano says that four players are in quarantine.
“I thought it was important that we did report our positives for a lot of reasons,” he says. “One, to help everybody else. We’re all in this together, that’s an understatement. We need to share information. We need to be very open about that.”
Schiano says that this is a challenging time and stresses that the on-campus workouts are voluntary.
“They don’t need to be here if they don’t want to be here or they don’t feel safe being here. There are some players that didn’t return, the felt better off staying where they were,” he says.

Schiano says that he is confident that the safety procedures Rutgers has put in place will keep everyone safe.
“We have a saying in our program, ‘You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.’ Well, it’s a little bit uncomfortable to say to somebody, ‘Hey, put a mask on’ or “Back off.’ But we have to do that,” Schiano says.
The coach says that he won’t speculate on when the next season of college football could happen. But he says that he is preparing as if the season will begin on Sept. 5.
“I don’t know where it’s all going. Hopefully we’re going to end up having a great season and America is going to have something to get behind. That’s my prayers. But most importantly, that people stay safe and we do the right thing,” he says.
Rutgers is now one of nearly 30 Division 1 football programs to report positive COVID-19 tests among athletes.
