A New Jersey-based parking app continues to reinvent itself during the pandemic.
News 12 New Jersey previously reported on the Boxcar app – a company that helped New Jersey residents find and rent parking spaces to use while commuting to work. But with most employees working from home, finding commuter parking was not a priority.
Boxcar then switched gears to offer contactless grocery delivery and pickups. And now the company has teamed up with several municipalities to offer a drive-in movie experience.
“Humans were not meant to be locked up and quarantined and one way people could get around that while maintaining social distancing, is a drive-in movie theater,” says Boxcar business developer Spencer Herman.
The first movie will be shown in Madison in the parking lot of the Madison Community Pool. The pool would usually be packed on Memorial Day Weekend. But instead, the parking lot will be packed for a showing of “The Princess Bride.” The May 29 show sold out within a half-hour.
And what is a movie experience without concessions? Boxcar has patrons covered in that aspect as well, teaming up with local businesses.

“When people buy a ticket, they can buy what we call an “add-on.” And they’ll see a concession list they can order from, but it will be contactless,” says Herman.
Other add-ons include a carwash before the movie. Herman says that it is all in an effort to help the community, as well as keeping the Boxcar company viable.
Two more movie dates are scheduled in Franklin Lakes. Boxcar is working with other towns to set up more showings. Ticket and show information can be found on the
Boxcar website.
