One of Broadway’s leading men has taken on a new role thanking health care workers after his fight with COVID-19.
Tony Award-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell has been singing from the window ledge of his Upper Westside Apartment ever since recovering from the virus. He says it is his way of thanking those who are working on the front line.
“What I’m doing is not a performance. It’s an act of gratitude,” Mitchell says.
Mitchell says that the virus took its toll on him when he had it.
“I felt like I was hit by a truck. I had a fever of 103.5. I was in bed, but I’m shivering cold with a heating pad,” he says.
But once he got better, he says that he bounced back.
“One day I just kind of spontaneously thought, ‘I’m going to sing.’ So, I started singing part of ‘The Impossible Dream,’” he says.
He says that the song’s lyrics perfectly apply to the difficult times ahead.
Mitchell is also the chairman of The Actors Fund – an organization that provides emergency financial assistance to performers and other entertainment professionals who are put out work by the pandemic. The organization has given out nearly $6.5 million in aid since mid-March.
Mitchell sings at 7 p.m. each night from his Manhattan home. He will join an all-star lineup on Sunday for an online charity concert celebrating composer Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday.
