The mayor of Lakewood says that weddings can resume in the town – but with restrictions to adhere to Gov. Phil Murphy’s social distancing executive order.

Mayor Raymond Coles says that no specific venue has been given the go-ahead to hold ceremonies. But he says that some schools in Lakewood have chapels in them and facilities for weddings.

Coles says that the ceremonies would be religious in nature and not civil ceremonies. Up to 10 people will be allowed to attend – the bride and groom, their parents and a religious official. Coles also says that the participants and guests must adhere to social distancing rules and wear masks.

The ceremony is expected to be quick and then the room will be disinfected once everyone leaves.

Coles says that the idea was brought up by a local group and that they consulted with the Lakewood Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer told NJ.com that since wedding venues have been deemed nonessential, no venues have been approved to hold weddings.

But he said, "A marriage ceremony itself is not an issue, as long as it comports with the requirements of all of the (executive orders) and (administrative orders). Less than 10 people total, social distancing and wearing masks.”

A spokesperson for the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General says that the state has not approved any plans for wedding celebrations to take place during the pandemic.
