A group of Boy Scouts in Paramus is showed their appreciation for those dealing with coronavirus up close by making them hot meals.
"They work long hours they don't eat and they can't leave because of the situation they're in so we come to them and we cook," says Kieran Coccaro, Paramus Eagle Scout 138.
In a parking lot next to the Bergen Community College testing site, a group of 10 volunteers from the Paramus Boy Scout Troop 138, the New Milford Fire Department and college staff cooked hot meals Sunday morning for health care workers, police, the National Guard and others.
The Mobile Emergency Response Kitchen, or MERK, made ham, egg and cheese sandwiches for breakfast along with fruit and yogurt. For lunch, they made cheesesteaks with peppers, onions and mushrooms.
The MERK first hit the road in 2016 and has been lending a helping hand throughout New Jersey and the country, even providing meals on the ground as part of hurricane relief in Florida and North Carolina in 2017 and 2018.
Paramus resident Ed Hill says he's thankful to have the opportunity to help out those who are on the front lines at this testing site.
"It was really neat I never experienced before we're passing people and they were clapping and it kind of got me," says Ed Hill, MERK Captain.
He says they've taped off the site to keep anyone from getting too close, are maintaining social distance and following guidelines by the local Office of Emergency by wearing masks, gloves and hats as an extra level of protection.
Anyone who is interested in donating or volunteering can contact Ed Hill at 201-419-8152 or edhill2002@aol.com.
