Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla issued a “self-isolation” policy for all city residents as New Jersey deals with the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Bhalla says that this policy is for all residents regardless if they are sick or not. He says that people should only be out in the city if it is absolutely necessary, such as to buy food or medicine, taking care of a family member or for people who are not able to work from home.
People will be allowed to go out for some fresh air, such as walking dogs or taking walks with family members. But Bhalla said to maintain “social distancing” practices and should not cluster in groups of more than five people.
Bhalla and Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante say that the decision comes after hundreds of people flocked to Hoboken bars and restaurants over the weekend in what was described as a “Spring Break atmosphere.” This was after the state government already asked people to practice “social distancing” to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Ferrante said that police received many calls over the weekend for rowdy behavior. He said that these types of calls take up police officers’ time for more serious matters.
Bhalla says that the policy will remain in effect for one week and will then be reassessed.
The policy is similar to one imposed in San Francisco earlier this week.
