New Jersey schools outline plans to deal with coronavirus in letter to parents

Schools around New Jersey are sending letters to parents with plans to address coronavirus concerns.

The West Orange School District sent a letter to parents informing them of its protocols should there be a "worst case scenario" of a student contracting the virus. The district includes 11 schools in total.

According to the district, it has been monitoring the global virus since last year.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to grow, and more confirmed and potential cases pop up domestically, the school district decided to ease minds how it could and sent parents the letter detailing the district's preparations.

The district will be cleaning and sterilizing its schools. If a student shows any symptoms associated with the coronavirus, parents would have to pick them up immediately to limit other students' exposure.

The district says its nurses are closely monitoring the global virus's developments because coronavirus symptoms are similar to other illnesses.

“The symptoms are unfortunately at first glance similar, so I think it's a matter of being extremely cautious in the event a student is presenting with fever with cough, with flu-like symptoms is that we're be treating every situation as carefully as possible and airing on the side of caution," says Superintendent Dr. J Scott Cascone.

The district says it would work with families to determine a safe date for a student to return to school. Dr. Cascone, as well as others in the area, are working with the Department of Health to come up with an even larger game plan for schools.

West Orange has developed a task force made up of school officials, police, fire and medical agencies.
