Murphy announces legislation to overhaul state's workplace sexual harassment laws

Gov. Phil Murphy announced new legislation Tuesday in an effort to overhaul New Jersey’s workplace sexual harassment laws.
The governor says that the bill provides stronger language defining what is a hostile workplace environment. The bill also creates great accountability for employers and adds domestic workers and unpaid interns to the list of employees protected by the law.
The bill also expands the statute of limitations regarding complaints.
“Today's legislation clarifies the severe or pervasive standard for establishing a hostile work environment...it makes clear that a single incident alone can create a hostile work environment and harassment need not involve physical touching,” Murphy said.
State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg is the lead sponsor of the bill. The senator has recently held public panels with women to discuss sexism and misogyny in state politics.
