Teachers' union: Active shooter drills can be traumatizing for students

Posted: Updated:

The American Federation of Teachers, which is the second largest teachers' union in the U.S., says it wants schools to end active shooter drills.

According to the teachers' federation, the drills can be traumatizing for students depending on how they are conducted – and some psychologists agree.

The teachers' federation says for schools that will continue to have shooter drills, information should be given to parents ahead of time, and the drills should be created by a team that includes mental health professionals.

The group doesn’t want the drill to involve students, like extreme risk laws, or staff training on lockout procedures and emergency medical procedures.
