Officials: Ex-Stevens Institute student admits setting dorm fire

Posted: Updated:

A former Stevens Institute of Technology student admitted to starting a fire in a dorm at the Hoboken school last year.

Hudson County prosecutors say 18-year-old Thomas Apostolico, of Toms River, pleaded guilty on Thursday to criminal mischief. The plea was made public Monday.

No students were injured in the Nov. 26 fire, which occurred in the basement of Humphrey Hall, a freshman dorm on the school's campus. But the heavy smoke conditions it caused forced authorities to evacuate the dorm's 150 residents. The prosecutor says that Apostolico had set fire to a dryer sheet and then threw it into a garbage can where he had previously discarded fireworks.

Apostolico agreed to pay $7,665.50 in restitution for damages.
