An early morning house fire killed a 52-year-old man and critically injured his wife in Ocean Grove.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office confirms that Michael Jennings died from injuries sustained in the fire. Jennings’ wife Catherine is in critical condition at the hospital, according to the prosecutor.
The fire broke out early Thursday morning in the three-story multifamily home on Broadway. Witnesses say that flames engulfed the home. They say that smoke and sirens woke them up in the middle of the night.
“I saw smoke coming. I quickly came outside and saw what was going on and the whole third floor was on fire,” says neighbor Jane Casale.
Authorities say that two emergency responders were treated for minor injuries.
The American Red Cross is assisting four people who were displaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities say that it does not seem to be suspicious.
