A Suffolk County police officer was found not guilty of threatening a group of women with his gun while off duty.
Gregory Hanrahan was found not guilty of three counts of menacing Tuesday.
The 32-year-old was accused of threatening a group of women with his gun back in 2017.
Prosecutors say it happened at 1:44 a.m. at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and West Main Street in Patchogue after a night of drinking.
Prosecutors say there was an altercation between Hanrahan and the group of women, and that words were exchanged.
Hanrahan's attorney says the entire incident was recorded from multiple angles on nearby security cameras.
According to the attorney, the video shows the officer walking away from the group after the altercation, before one of the women approaches him and grabs him in the area where his gun was holstered on his waistband.
Attorney Anthony LaPinta says Hanrahan's intent was not to scare the women, but to protect his weapon, which he was trained to do in the police academy.
LaPinta says before becoming a Suffolk police officer, Hanrahan was a Suffolk corrections officer and a U.S. Marine.
Hanrahan is still suspended without pay from the Suffolk Police Department pending an internal investigation.
The Suffolk Police Department is not commenting on the case. News 12 is still waiting to hear back from the Suffolk PBA.
