Authorities say a prisoner that was being detained by officers at Newark Liberty International Airport was caught after briefly escaping Tuesday morning.
New York Port Authority and New Jersey police say the prisoner escaped around 11:30 a.m. at a site in Terminal C at the airport.
Officials say they were quickly able to capture the prisoner and that there was “minimal operation impact” at the airport.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said in a statement that the CBP officers and Homeland Security Investigations agents arrested the man because he was attempting to leave the country despite having been indicted and prohibited from leaving New York state pending trial.
The CBP spokesperson added, “CBP officers escorted him to Terminal C for processing, the subject asked to use the restroom and subsequently attempted to escape into the ceiling. CBP was able to extract the subject from the ceiling and turned him over to HSI for federal prosecution.”
Further details about the prisoner and his case were not disclosed.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
