First responders in Passaic County have rescued a person who fell through a frozen lake – all during a week in which two teenagers have already died elsewhere in New Jersey under similar circumstances.

This latest incident happened Beech Road near the Boat Launch of the Monksville Reservoir. A spokesperson for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection tells News 12 New Jersey that police took the person to Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains for treatment. His condition was not immediately known.

The rescue happened two days after two teenage boys died in separate falls through thin ice in Carteret and in East Brunswick. David Tillberg, 15, and Yusef Khela, 13, were each with friends when they fell through thin ice. First responders attempted to revive each of them, but were unsuccessful.

Following the tragedies, Gov. Phil Murphy offered his condolences and warned other New Jerseyans to be careful around frozen bodies of water. “Please stay off and away from frozen lakes and ponds. No ice is safe ice,” the governor wrote on Twitter.
