Police: Teen dies after falling into icy East Brunswick pond

Posted: Updated:

A 13-year-old has died after falling through an icy pond on Civic Center Drive in East Brunswick, police say.

Emergency crews arrived at the pond just before 5 p.m. Two boys were able to get themselves off the ice, but the victim had fallen through and remained in the water.

The unidentified teen was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Six police officers and two firefighters were treated for hypothermia -- three remained hospitalized Wednesday night.

The student was an eighth-grader at Churchill Junior High School. The superintendent says counseling will be made available for students at all three secondary schools in the district.
