Township to close airport with turf runway in September
(AP) - A New Jersey township says it plans to shut down an airport it purchased almost two decades ago and will continue to review possible future uses for the 121-acre site.
NJ.com reports that the 81-year-old Trinca Airport in Sussex County, where planes take off and land on a turf runway, will be shut down Sept. 1.
Green Township bought the airport 18 years ago for $2.28 million.
Mayor Margaret Phillips said financial and safety considerations drove the decision.
She said a particular concern was unknown future costs, such as any improvements that could be ordered by federal authorities.
