Cory Booker ends presidential bid after polling, money struggles

Posted: Updated:

Sen. Cory Booker has dropped out of the presidential race after failing to qualify for the December Democratic primary debate.

Booker announced Monday that he was ending a campaign whose message of unity and love failed to gain traction in a political era marked by chaos and anxiety.

“I can't wait to get on the campaign trail and work for whoever the eventual nominee is and for candidates up and down the ballot,” Booker told his supporters.

The U.S. senator from New Jersey had struggled in polling and fundraising since launching his bid last February. Booker was unable to qualify for the January debate stage.

Booker's departure leaves a field that was once the most diverse in history with just one remaining African American candidate.

President Donald Trump reacted to the news on Twitter in the snarky manner for which he is known.

“Really Big Breaking News (Kidding): Booker, who was in zero polling territory, just dropped out of the Democrat Presidential Primary Race. Now I can rest easy tonight. I was sooo concerned that I would someday have to go head to head with him!” the president tweeted.

Booker says that he does plan to run for re-election for his Senate seat.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
