Murphy administration 'appalled' by NJ.com report about sexual misconduct in politics

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Phil Murphy's administration says it is "appalled" by details of sexual misconduct toward women in state politics uncovered in a recent news article.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver wrote in a letter Tuesday to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg that both she and the governor found the behavior described in an NJ.com article published late last month to be appalling.

The report led Weinberg to form a committee to investigate the treatment of women in politics. Oliver's letter suggests 17 candidates for the group.

“I was heartened by [Sen. Weinberg’s] leadership creating an ad hoc committee of women leaders to address the deeply rooted culture of misogyny which pervades New Jersey politics. We stand ready to work with the Majority Leader to change this culture,” Oliver posted on Twitter.

The NJ.com article cited lobbyists and others who reported being subjected to misconduct, including assault.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
