Family finds venomous scorpion in luggage after trip to Costa Rica

Posted: Updated:

An Atlantic County family says that they made a frightening discovery after returning from a trip to Costa Rica – a venomous scorpion.

The family says that they found the arachnid inside of a suitcase after returning home. They said that they put it in a golf bag and put that bag out in the garage until authorities came.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection came out to the home to take the scorpion.

"Although the DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife does not regulate scorpions, DEP staff retrieved the scorpion and is working to find an appropriate home for it,” a spokesperson for the department said in a statement.

It was not clear how the scorpion got into the luggage.
