School officials in an Essex County school district have issued a statement after a video posted on social media showed a group of high school girls using racial slurs.
The video, originally posted on Snapchat on New Year’s Day, depicts several unidentified Nutley High School students using the N-word. The girls in the video are white. Officials say that the video was posted online without the girls' knowledge.
Nutley school officials issued a statement Thursday condemning the video.
“While we cannot comment on the specifics of our investigation, please be assured that the Nutley Public School District condemns all acts of bigotry, racism and hate,” Superintendent Dr. Julie Glazer said in the statement.
Glazer says that they will use this incident as an opportunity “to highlight cultural responsiveness and sensitivity within our district, curriculum and community.”
The superintendent said that the community must rise above and reject hatred.
School officials did not release information about the students. But students at the high school tell News 12 New Jersey that the girls are freshmen and have been suspended for five days due to the video.
The Nutley Police Department and Essex County Prosecutor's Office have also reviewed the video. Officials say that while the video is "inappropriate and in poor judgment...no crime was committed."
"The Nutley Police Department will continue to monitor social media outlets. Although it is understood that everyone has the right to voice their opinions, any perceived threats or acts of violence will be fully investigated," Detective Lt. A. Montanari said in a statement.
