Authorities say a man working in a ditch in Monmouth County was seriously injured Tuesday when it collapsed around his lower body.

The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. in Marlboro Township. The 64-year-old man, who was working for a paving company, was trapped in the ditch for a short time before emergency responders could free him.

He was taken to a hospital and was being treated for undisclosed injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The injured man's name was not released.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear. Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
