More than two dozen inmates accused of low-level crimes across New York are expected to be released today from the Nassau County Jail, and will instead wait for their trials at home.
The news comes thanks to the new state bail reform. The 29 people are accused of misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies.
The law was passed in April to help fight overcrowding. New Jersey updated bail reforms back in 2017.
Extra security will be in place at prisons around the state.
The county jail expects the releases to be completed by mid-afternoon.
