Second New Jersey municipality declares opposition to gun control

Posted: Updated:

Sussex Borough has become the second New Jersey municipality to declare its opposition to gun control.

The council in Sussex Borough voted to adopt a resolution in support of becoming a "Second Amendment and lawful gun owner municipality."

The town of West Milford adopted a similar resolution earlier this month, declaring itself a sanctuary city for gun owners.

In an unanimously passed resolution, council members of West Milford Township said that they opposed new gun control legislation recently passed by Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration, particularly the “red flag laws.”

The resolution mentions gun safety and “red flag laws,” saying that these laws “have nothing to do with teaching or promoting the safe and lawful use of firearms."

New Jersey’s “red flag laws” allow police – at a family member’s request and with a judge’s approval – to take away someone’s guns if they are determined to be a risk to themselves or others.

The resolution is not an ordinance. It runs out at the end of the year and it would need to be voted on again in 2020.

Neither resolution is binding, as they do not over rule any existing state or federal gun laws.

Sussex Borough is about 25 miles from West Milford and home to 1,800 residents.
