With Christmas less than a week away, the question on many people’s minds is if New Jersey will see a white Christmas.
State forecasters say that unfortunately, the chances of snow this Christmas are slim.
“Officially, if you want to look at the numbers for a white Christmas, it’s an inch of snow or more on the ground on the morning – Christmas morning,” says state climatologist David Robinson.
But not all hope is lost. The further north one lives in New Jersey, the greater the chances of snow on the ground Christmas morning. For Newton in Sussex County, there is about a 36% chance of snow. For New Brunswick in Middlesex County – a 17% chance. Toms River in Ocean County only has a 9% chance of snow.
But even if there is snow on the ground Christmas morning – the odds of snow falling on Christmas Day are not very good, according to Robinson.
“The chance of having measurable snow on Christmas Day itself, falling on Christmas Day, that's about a 6% chance. But the fact is when you think about it over a normal winter, it doesn't snow very often,” he says.
Forecasters say that temperatures will be near 50 degrees on Christmas Eve and in the mid-40s for Christmas Day, meaning that if there is precipitation, it will most likely be rain.
