Police departments around the state are stepping up their enforcement for the holiday season.
They received nearly $600,000 in overtime grants from the state to cover checkpoints and overtime patrols. 
It's part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. 
Last year, 20% of all motor vehicle deaths in New Jersey were alcohol related. 
Nationally, 10,511 people died in 2018 in drunk driving crashes. 
The societal cost associated with these crashes is estimated to be $44 billion annually.
