Small Business Saturday kicks off in Ridgewood ahead of impending storm

Posted: Updated:

The 10th annual Small Business Saturday kicked off in Ridgewood ahead of Sunday's storm.

Shoppers were out on Main Street, which is lined with small businesses. Some of the businesses have been open for decades, like Hillman Electric on East Ridgewood Avenue, which dates back 47 years.

The owner says the store has changed with the times, and that their big item is light fixtures. He says in the past, the store sold transistor radios and even played the first TV broadcast in their store.

Small Business Saturday started in 2010 as an idea of American Express. It was formally recognized by Congress in 2017.

According to Small Business Association, nearly 2 million people are employed by small businesses in New Jersey.

And Saturday was the better weekend day to get shopping done. News 12 meteorologists say a mix of snow and rain is in the forecast for Sunday, as people are heading home from Thanksgiving. The storm will linger into Monday.

Highway crews were seen taking precautions and preparing the roads with a layer of salt.
