New Jersey man turns passion for woodworking into small business

Posted: Updated:

A Howell man has turned his passion for woodworking into a small business.

William Black has been creating and selling special wood art pieces to the public. His carvings have been showing up inside and outside homes all around the state.

“Those expressions on their faces is like, ‘Wow. This is really cool,’” he says of his customers.

Black’s artwork is made by hand, not in a factory. He says that it all started years ago with a request by his wife – a simple keychain. Edna Black says that it grew from there.

“I was pregnant with our youngest, and I wanted a rocking horse. So, he came home and built me a rocking horse,” Edna says. “And I still have it today.”

Black now makes seasonal life-size pieces like Santa and his reindeer and Easter bunnies. He even made a large wooden firetruck.

Black says that it is not always about the money.

"When I'm driving around somewhere and I see one of my things or something that someone has brought from me out in the yard, it makes me feel better because somebody else is actually enjoying my work,” he says.

Edna says that since Black retired, the woodworking business is keeping him busy and sane.

“It’s his therapy,” she says.
