A Matawan Regional High School teacher who retired at age 89 was joined Friday by former students to celebrate a milestone - his 100th birthday.

Howard Lloyd was still teaching literature and language arts up until 10 years ago. Now, his former students lined up to take photos with him while the high school band played music on his lawn.

Catherine Schofield is a science teacher due in part to Mr. Lloyd. She remembers so much of what he taught her in English class her senior year.

"The day he walked into the room and put "Mad Magazine" on all the desks and told us we were learning satire," says Schofield. "That was an epic thing for a teacher in the '70s to do."

Lloyd was born in 1919 and is a proud veteran of World War II. He served as an engineer.

Lloyd's daughter says her father was charged with turning the water back on in Rome on June 5, 1944. He also cleared landing fields for planes and built bridges.

His former students honored him for his 62 years as a teacher. In some cases, Lloyd taught three generations of families.
